Tuesdays Together

Page history last edited by Andrea 1 mo ago

“Sunday School” is now “Tuesdays Together”!  Every Tuesday evening from 5:30-7:30, starting September 15th, we are inviting your family and all families in the surrounding communities to join us for free pizza dinners, lessons and songs about faith, and small group time for families to do art projects and play games.  Food, Family and Faith Every Week!!!  We will be using the FaithInkubators BibleSong Curriculum (faithink.com) which endeavors to equip parents to teach their faith and values to their children.  Tuesdays nights we will gather to provide tools and support to help families talk about faith together and have fun with one another.  The curriculum is designed especially for K-4th graders and their families.  If you are interested in ministries designed for older children please look into our Head2Heart Confirmation Ministry.

Please consider being a part of this ministry if you have any of the following gifts: love for children, technological abilities (running a projector, laptop, Powerpoint and digital cameras), interest in learning and then teaching simple sign language, preparing art projects and guiding children and their families to talk about their faith.  All of you can be a part of this ministry by inviting families you know to be a part of this exciting weekly event!  Please contact Pastor Broers with your interest in this ministry.  Thank you for your prayers and support!

(Listed below are the lesson topics, the scripture verse used for each night and the possible crafts we may be working on).  If you are a "Tuesday Together" guide, please sign in and press edit to add your own ideas.  Once we have a lot of ideas, we'll make our final decision.

Lesson Title   (What the story is all about)  Scripture Verse that is used for the Song.

1.  Jericho Walls (Joshua fought de battle of Jericho and the walls came a tumblin down)

"Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. I will not fail you or forsake you."   — Joshua 1:4, 5b

- Build a wall and act out the story.  Use cardboard bricks that the Broers' have and instruments that are at church (band in the box, Kristy's box of instruments)

2.  Joshua's Call (Joshua leads the Israelites to the promised land and says, "As for me and my house we will serve the lord)

As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord."   — Joshua 124:15b

- Come in with a picture of the child's family/draw a picture of their family

- Decorate Dish towels with the verse, "As for me and my household we will serve the Lord."

3. Deborah (God raises up leaders for the Israelites, especially one woman named Deborah)

"Hear, O kings! Give ear, O princes! To the Lord I will sing. I will make melody to the Lord the God of Israel."   — Judges 5:3

- Have each child bring in a picture of a faithful woman in their life.  Write a poem about them (using a model poem with fill in the blanks).

(Back up with making musical instruments)

5.   We Want A King (The Israelites demand that God give them a King so he gives them Saul who looks big and mighty but who isn't a great king really inside)

"The Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart."   — 1 Samuel 16:7b

- Mold clay hearts with a little cross inside (goes along with the song for this week "God looks on the heart"

* Plant flowers in an odd container, like an old shoe. Discuss that it is not the outside that counts, but the inside. Discuss instances where someone or something was not what it appeared to be. (This would also work for Lesson 9 - God Sees All)

6. David and the Giant (David and Goliath)

- Veggitales movie

* Draw a nine foot Goliath in chalk on a big piece of paper, or weather permitting, outside on the walkway.  Have the kids take turns laying down in it to discuss the movie/Bible story.

* Let's have the kids come in pajamas since we are watching a movie, for added fun. Perhaps they can bring a pillow and blanket.  Maybe instead of dessert we can have popcorn.

7.  David's Great Escapes   (This story is Saul trying to kill David, but David being saved by God)

"The Lord is my rock, my fortress, my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my savior; you save me from violence. I call upon the Lord who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies.

And David danced before the Lord with all his might."   — 2 Samuel 22:1-4, 6:14

- Play hide and go seek

- Create a collage of things God saves us from

*Create an obstacle course with traps, and other imaginative things to stay away from.

* Have the kids dance slow and fast, maybe like leaves blowing in the wind since it will be fall.

8.  Solomon's Wisdom (The story of how Solomon dealt with two women who said they had the same baby)

"But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Even heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you, much less this house that I have built! Hear the plea of your servant and of your people Israel when they pray toward this place; O hear in heaven your dwelling place; heed and forgive."   — 1 Kings 8:27, 30

- Draw the story or act it out (Solomon being asked to cut the baby in two)

- FreezeFrame idea of story (using a digital camera, take pictures of how the story progresses by having kids freeze at certain parts of the story)

- Woodcut art for coloring the scene (it is a beautiful picture for this week)

*Dress up a chair like a throne, and have the kids take turns sitting in it.  While playing the king, they take a slip of paper with a problem on it, and they decide how to solve it fairly.

*Have the kids sit in a circle and pass a staff around that would serve as a talking stick. The kids take turns deciding between needs and wants.

9.  God Sees All (Contest between Elijah and the prophets of Baal)

"I know your rising and your sitting, your going out and coming in."   — 2 Kings 14:27

-  Act out the contest between Elijah and the prophets of Baal.  Have the families create all the props.  This is a very dramatic story and would be a very fun one to do.

- Create some kind of eye glasses where the families could show what the world sees and then what God sees (for instance, we see a dirty, homelss person, then the flap is turned up and we see a beautiful baby with the nametag - child of God)

* Plant flowers in an odd container, like an old shoe.

10.  Judah's Last Chance (A story about the reforms made of King Josiah after the Israelites had turned away from God)

"Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all peoples. For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; he is to be referred above all gods. Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice, and let them say among the nations, "The Lord is King!" Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; let the field exult and everything in it. Then shall the trees of the forest sing for joy before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth. O give thanks to the Lord, for his is good; for his steadfast love endures forever."   — 1 Chronicles 16:24-25

- This story is about repentance, saying your sorry.  We could talk about what some famous people have done wrong and had to say sorry about (baseball players on steroids, politicians lying, car accidents, stealing).  Then we could talk about how each of the people in the family do things wrong sometimes too and how important it is to say "I'm sorry".  At the end, we could do something so that everyone would hear and know that their sins are forgiven.  (For instance, they could write it on paper and then we could burn up the paper--anyone have a portable woodstove? :)  )

*We could create floating Kratongs and float the sins away.  I did this at the Capitol Childrens' Museum.  They are made with petal cut out of tissue paper, and glued onto styrofoam bowls.  We could write the sins on some of the petals and float them in a kiddie pool.

*I think the story is also about praising God.  We could make a praise mobile. The kids could learn about the difference between praise and thankfulness. A couple of stars, a moon and a cloud could hang from the mobile.  On the cloud they can write Praise Him son and moon and stars. (Psalm 148:13)

*Make praise instruments  (We praise you with trumpet sound, ...harp and lyre... timbrel and dancing... with stringed instruments and pipe... We praise you with loud cymbals. Psalm 150: 1-6)

11.  Jeremiah and the Exile (Elijah is Taken up into Heaven in a chariot of fire-he passes his gifts to Elisha)

"If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayer that is made in this place. For now I have chosen and consecrated this house so that my name may be there foreverl my eyes and my heart will be there for all time."   — 2 Chronicles 7:14-16

- Kids being called by God.  (Jeremiah was only a boy when called by God).  Maybe we could do a service project, like filling boxes with supplies for a nearby woman's shelter or something like that.

*We could do the Operation Christmas Child as the service project, if we could do the lesson in November.  The boxes need to be dropped off the week before Thanksgiving.   -------------- RESPONSE, right now, this lesson (#11) is scheduled for Tuesday Nov. 24, the day before Thanksgiving vacation begins with an early dismissal on Wed. (25th)  Would this work or does it need to be switched with the lesson the week before?

Can we switch it with the lesson the week before?  I am afraid people will be traveling and we may have low attendance on that day.  Also, the week before we do this actual packing, I will need 15 minutes to explain the project, give out the brochure, and show a 10 minute video. I would like a list of families who attended VBS and extend an invitation to them to participate.  Perhaps that could be away to get more people to come.

12.  The Exiles Return (The Exiles are returned to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple)

"When the builders laid the foundations of the temple of the Lord, the priests in their vestments were stationed to praise with trumpets…and with cymbals…and they sang responsively, praising and giving thanks: "For he is good. For his steadfast love endures forever toward Israel.""   — Ezra 3:10-11

- Build instruments to play along with the song at the part where it says "Praise with trumpets and with cymbals and they sang responsively, praising and giving thanks."

*See ideas for Lesson 10

13.  Rebuilding the Walls (Nehemiah gets permission to rebuild the walls)

"But now, O God, strengthen my hands."   — Neheimiah 6:9

- Is there some way they could actually build something?

- Something to do with hands.  God uses our hands.  Maybe make a clay hand and write down what God calls us to do in our communities. This would make a nice installation, if we could display them in the church before letting them take the art pieces home.

14.  Esther's Gamble (The story about how Ester became queen and how God used her to save his people)

"Go to the king to make supplication to him. Entreat him for your (her) people. Who knows? Perhaps you have come into the kingdom for such a time as this."   — Esther 4:8b, 14b (RSV)

- Something about courage.  There is also a very good veggitales movie, but it is an hour long by itself.  Maybe clips of it.

*We could make a Hero Sandwich out of paper, and define courage on each layer of the sandwich, or the other traits Esther displayed that helped her to be a hero.  Then the kids could hold up an empty picture frame around their faces as we sit in a circle and talk about "I have courage when I...."

15.  Job's Big Test (Job loses everything, his friends try to help but make it worse and then God gives his point of view)

"Can you find out the deep things of God? Can you find out the limit of the Almighty? It is higher than heaven - what can you do? Deeper than Sheol - what can you know? Its measure is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea. If he passes through, and imprisons, and assembles for judgment, who can hinder him? For he knows those who are worthless; when he see iniquity, will he not consider it? But a stupid person will get understanding, when a wild ass is born human."   — Job 11:7-12

- A drama about Job losing everything, his friends trying to help and then God talking to him.

- We could write down our questions to God and talk about how sometimes we don't have the answers, parents don't have the answers and God's answers don't seem so great.  So, we trust in God even during times when we cannot understand.

*We could play trust games - Faith, Trust Walk  or falling back while letting others catch you.
